LESVOS - MONUMENTS & PLACES OF HISTORICAL INTEREST

  • Prehistoric settlement of Thermi. Important place of the Bronze Age in the area of ​​Thermi. The only systematically excavated prehistoric settlement on the island.
  • Sacred Apollo. In Klopedi stand the romantic ruins of the important archaic temple of Apollo (8th-6th century BC) with the characteristic wind capitals in the tall columns. A special monument for the Greek soils.
  • Pallesvian Sanctuary of Messos. In Agia Paraskevi is the most important place of worship of ancient Lesvos, where the ruins of the temple of Zeus (4th century BC) and the early Christian basilica that succeeded him are preserved.
  • Ancient theater of Mytilene. From the large Hellenistic theater of Mytilene, dug into the rock, only its large orchestra to the west of the city survives. It remains an idyllic landscape that is utilized in some cultural events.
  • Roman aqueduct. A little north of the city of Mytilene, in the area of ​​Kamares, part of the aqueduct of the city of Roman times is preserved. This is an impressive 17-arc array in height.
  • Mytilene Castle. Above the modern city of Mytilene dominates the impressively large castle, one of the largest in Greece, built in the 6th century. at the site of the ancient citadel and experienced many construction phases until the 18th c. A reference point for the island.
  • Ancient Mithymna - Castle of Molyvos. Ancient Mithymna, the second most important city of ancient Lesvos, is located on the site of today's picturesque Molyvos. Its citadel was integrated into its medieval castle, which dominates beautifully above the settlement.
  • Acropolis of Eressos. Remains of the ancient citadel as well as the later medieval castle are preserved at the top of the hill above Skala Eressos. No systematic excavations have been carried out and the site remains unused.
