LIMNOS - MUSEUMS
Along the Roman beach are the impressive homes of Lemnian aristocracy, all built in the second half of the 19th century. They reflect the prosperity of their owners and the unique taste they cultivated while living in the cosmopolitan centres of the time such as Alexandria, Odessa and Trieste.
Amongst these buildings is the Archaeological Museum, where exhibits include finds from digs carried out at Poliochni, Hephaestia and Cabeiria, as well as the few antiquities the Greeks of the neighbouring island of Imvros had time to take with them before leaving their homes.
The Metropolitan Mansion is also located on the Romeiko beach, that used to be the residence of a rich Egyptian. Now it houses the Ecclesiastic Museum of the island which contains ecclesiastic utensils, vestments, and exceptional icons.
In the village of Portiano lies the Folklore Museum, while in Nea Koutali is the Museum of Maritime Tradition and Sponge Fishing, which presents the nautical life of the Koutalianoi before they were violently expatriated from Propontis and a display of the Nea Koutali archaeological collection, which includes objects collected by sponge fishermen from the depths of the sea. In Kondias a Contemporary Balkan Art Gallery, unique in Greece, has been created. The Gallery houses 74 paintings by Balkan artists.
