The history of Mytilene ouzo begins around 1800, when in the narrow alleys of the city - where all the small taverns and cafes were located - the tavern owners made the first attempts to distill in copper pots anise, the plant that they found in abundance in Lesvos, in an alcohol solution. In these streets, where the air smelled of aromatic herbs, the history of ouzo MINI Mytilene was initialed.
The Asia Minor catastrophe, with the wave of refugees from the East, added to the ouzo tradition of new knowledge and experiences that the refugees brought with them to their new homeland. The newcomers combined their passion and techniques with the locals, slowly creating a new era for ouzo. In the years that followed, the distillery developed rapidly on the island.
1967: The first "official" page in the history of EPOM (Mytilene Distillers Association) and ouzo MINI was written on the waterfront, when 17 distillers joined hands and joined forces in a collective effort with a common vision: the spread of their favorite ouzo across the length and breadth of the earth. This was the beginning of a successful, steady upward trajectory. EPOM is the continuation of a long tradition, with accumulated experience, technique and passion which over the years, has developed into one of the largest ouzo production units in Greece.
1996: A milestone year in the history of EPOM and ouzo MINI. In December, the ownership changed with the transfer of 95% of the shares of the company from the 17 founding families to the Pernod Ricard group which is today (2015) the 2nd largest company for the production and marketing of alcoholic beverages in the world.
Today: The facilities of Pernod Ricard Hellas in the city of Mytilene remain one of the largest ouzo production units in Greece, while ouzo MINI is still one of the most important and beloved ouzo brands in the hearts of Greeks.
